Why Paleo Breakfast is So Wonderful
The Paleo diet comprises food groups that are focused on providing nutritional improvements over more typical processed food intakes that are commonly included within many modern day diets. The Paleo Diet has a genetic driver in that it is founded on the theory that modern day genes have been derived from the conditions that were formed and evolved from over a million years ago during the Stone Age.
More recent farming techniques, animal husbandry and agricultural cultivation in general have only been developed over relatively recent times (maybe up to around ten thousand years from the earliest introduction of any such techniques), so it is reasoned that the human body has not had the time needed to adapt itself to enable proper digestion of processed foods.
Although this may seem to be a long time, it is very short in relative terms. In fact, it takes quite a while longer for mankind to adjust our physiology and metabolism to the great changes in lifestyle that has been experienced. Mankind has simply not had sufficient time for our genes to evolve to enable consumption of dairy products and grains, which explains why such a large proportion of the population experiences so many digestive issues via other modern diets.The staples of the Paleo diet include fish, meats, fruits and vegetables, which are the food groups that our ‘caveman’ ancestors consumed. On the other hand, the Paleo Diet avoids processed foods altogether. So in essence, anything packaged or processed is avoided.
Instead there are many ‘healthy’ food groups that form the foundation of a Paleo diet. For example, a key intake is lean meat. Organ meat cuts like tongues and liver can also be consumed. Dairy products were not the norm for our ancient ancestors, but they did eat some eggs. The Paleo Diet suggests that egg intake be limited to approximately half a dozen in a week. For those of us who are lucky enough to not be inflicted by a nut allergy, the Paleo Diet also allows for consumption of nuts, which provide healthy monounsaturated fats.
Nuts have a beneficial impact in reducing the chance of cardiac disease and in lowering cholesterol. Nuts have also been credited with lowering the incidences of some cancers, including breast cancer. Many are attracted to a Paleo Diet for its proven capacity to help you lose weight. The key consideration here though is to limit your intake of nuts, which can be quite high in calories if consumed in excess rather than in moderation. One of the effects of the Paleo Diet is to increase metabolism, which will mean that you can consume proportionally more, including an increased intake of nuts, as your metabolism improves.Although packaged foods are avoided, this should not be interpreted as providing a ‘green flag’ to consume foods that are not packed. Sugar and related sugary foods are to be entirely avoided, as are foods that are grain based, such as pasta, rolls, cookies and last but not least, our stone age ancestors did not consume butter, cheese, cream and other associated diary products and as a result, these foods are also to be avoided.
On the surface, the Paleo Diet may seem somewhat restrictive, but the reality is that the food groups included provide for a good range of Paleo friendly recipes and most importantly, there are many health benefits associated with following a Paleo Diet regime. As the Paleo Diet consists predominantly of high-protein foods, research has demonstrated that if followed for just a six month period, a typical weight loss of anywhere from ten to fifteen pounds can be experienced by the average person, without any adjustment to exercise.
Further weight loss goals can be achieved by introducing a modest increment to physical activity during the same period. There is no doubt that the Paleo Diet offers a healthy and prudent diet alternative to anyone seeking to lose weight and enjoy lifestyle that provides for a reduced risk of adverse health. Individual dietary needs will vary based on numerous factors, including any pre-disposition to food allergies, your age, sex, height, weight and level of daily exercise you undertake, as well as other possible factors.
